यह भजन संत कबीर की एक प्रसिद्ध रचना है, जिसमें वे आत्मा (जीव) को एक नवविवाहिता स्त्री के रूप में संबोधित करते हैं, जो अभी तक अपने पति (परमात्मा) से घूंघट की वजह से मिल नहीं पाई है। यहाँ घूंघट सिर्फ कपड़े का पर्दा नहीं, बल्कि अज्ञान, अहंकार और माया का पर्दा है जो जीवात्मा और परमात्मा के बीच खड़ा है।
“घूंघट के पट खोल री, तोहे राम मिलेंगे” कबीर कहते हैं — अपने अज्ञान और अहंकार का पर्दा हटाओ, तभी तुम्हें राम (परमात्मा) के दर्शन होंगे। जब तक मन पर माया का आवरण है, ईश्वर से साक्षात्कार असंभव है।
“घट घट में वह सांई रमता, कटुक वचन मत बोल री” ईश्वर हर प्राणी के हृदय में, हर कण में व्याप्त है — वह बाहर कहीं दूर नहीं, तुम्हारे भीतर ही है। इसलिए किसी से भी कटु वचन मत बोलो, क्योंकि हर जीव में वही परमात्मा वास करता है।
“धन यौवन का गर्व न कीजै, झूठा पचरंग चोल री” धन-दौलत और जवानी पर घमंड मत करो। ये सब क्षणभंगुर हैं — जैसे रंग-बिरंगा वस्त्र कुछ समय बाद फीका पड़ जाता है, वैसे ही सांसारिक सुख-वैभव भी अस्थायी और भ्रामक हैं।
“सुन्न महल में दीप बारि ले, आसन सों मत डोल री” अपने भीतर के शून्य/एकांत मन-रूपी महल में ज्ञान का दीपक जलाओ, यानी आत्म-चिंतन करो, ध्यान लगाओ, और साधना के आसन से विचलित मत हो — स्थिर होकर साधना में लगे रहो।
“जोग जुगत सों रंग महल में, पिया पायो अनमोल री” सही योग-साधना और युक्ति से ही उस दिव्य महल में अनमोल प्रियतम यानी परमात्मा की प्राप्ति होती है। यह मिलन साधना और सही विधि से ही संभव है, कोई शॉर्टकट नहीं है।
“कहै 'कबीर' आनन्द भयो है, बाजत अनहद ढोल री” अंत में कबीर कहते हैं — जब आत्मा को परमात्मा का साक्षात्कार होता है, तो भीतर अपार आनंद की अनुभूति होती है, मानो भीतर ही अनहद नाद गूंज रहा हो। यह उस परम सुख की अवस्था है जो शब्दों से परे है।
सार रूप में: यह भजन आत्मा और परमात्मा के मिलन का रूपक है, जिसमें कबीर संदेश देते हैं कि बाहरी दिखावे, अहंकार और मोह-माया को त्यागकर, आत्म-चिंतन और सच्ची भक्ति से ही ईश्वर की प्राप्ति संभव है — जो हर हृदय में पहले से ही विराजमान है।
This bhajan is one of Kabir's most celebrated compositions, in which he addresses the soul (jeevatma) as a newly married bride who has not yet met her husband (the Divine/Paramatma) because of the veil covering her face. Here, the veil is not literal cloth — it represents ignorance, ego, and illusion (maya) that stand between the individual soul and the Supreme Soul.
"Open the veil, and you shall meet the Lord" — Remove the veil of ignorance and ego; only then can divine realization occur.
"The Divine dwells in every heart" — God is not distant; He resides within every being. Hence, speak no harsh words to anyone, for the same divine presence lives in all.
"Take no pride in wealth or youth" — Worldly possessions and youth are temporary, like a colorful garment that eventually fades — an illusion, not lasting truth.
"Light the lamp of wisdom in the empty palace" — Turn inward in meditation and self-reflection; remain steady and undistracted in your spiritual practice.
"Through true yoga, the priceless Beloved is found" — Union with the Divine comes only through correct spiritual discipline and sincere effort — there is no shortcut.
"Bliss has come, the unstruck drum plays" — Upon true realization, the soul experiences boundless joy, as though an inner, self-sounding divine music (anahad naad) resonates within — a state of supreme peace beyond words.
In essence: This bhajan is an allegory for the union of the soul with the Divine. Kabir's message is that by shedding outer pretense, ego, and worldly attachment, and turning to sincere devotion and self-inquiry, one can realize the God who already resides within every heart.
